Tom Ponting
Swimming Athlete — Inducted 1996
Thomas Harold “Tom” Ponting is one of Canada’s most accomplished Olympic swimmers and a dominant butterfly specialist whose career spanned more than a decade at the highest level of international competition.
Born January 28, 1965, in Montreal, Quebec, Ponting trained and competed with the University of Calgary swim program, where he developed into one of Canada’s premier swimmers. Over the course of his career, he won thirty-one Canadian national individual championships and contributed to more than 260 relay victories.
Ponting represented Canada at three consecutive Olympic Games — Los Angeles in 1984, Seoul in 1988, and Barcelona in 1992 — earning an Olympic medal at each appearance as a member of Canada’s 4 × 100-metre medley relay team. He captured silver medals in both 1984 and 1988 and added a bronze medal in 1992, becoming one of only a few Canadian swimmers to win Olympic medals at three different Games.
Internationally, Ponting achieved continued success beyond the Olympics. He won six medals at Commonwealth Games competition, six medals at Pan Pacific Championships, and two medals at the World University Games. In 1989, while competing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Championships, he set a world and Canadian record in the 100-metre butterfly with a time of 52.62 seconds — a performance that remains one of the most outstanding achievements in Canadian university swimming history.
Ponting also contributed to world-record performances as a member of Canada’s 4 × 100-metre medley relay teams in both 1991 and 1992.
Throughout his competitive career, he received numerous honours recognizing his excellence in sport, including being named Calgary Booster Club Honoured Athlete twice, receiving multiple Government of Canada Achievement Awards, being selected the City of Calgary Athlete of the Year in 1985, and earning recognition as Canada’s Aquatic Athlete of the Year for 1988–89. He also won overall World Cup titles in 1989 and 1991 for accumulating the highest points totals on the international circuit.
