Andrew Purcell

Tennis, Hockey Athlete - Inducted 1983

Andrew "Shorts" Purcell played hockey with the Edmonton Athletic Club in the early 1930s. He went on to play with the Edmonton Argos and then with the Edmonton Superiors. From 1936 to 1939, he played with the Edmonton Dominions and the following season with the Edmonton Flyers. He coached the University of Alberta Golden Bears Hockey Team from 1941 to 1944. Andrew Purcell was an outstanding tennis player as well, having won the City of Edmonton singles championships ten times. He was the City's Doubles Champion seven times and the City's Mixed Doubles Champion for four years between 1937 and 1944.
