Gail Ross

Equestrian Athlete — Inducted 1982

Gail Ross was a trailblazing Canadian equestrian whose success on both the national and international stage helped elevate Alberta show jumping during the 1960s and 1970s.

Competing on the Alberta equestrian circuit from the age of seven, Ross quickly developed into one of Western Canada’s most accomplished riders. Her international career began in 1961, leading to competition across Canada, the United States, England, Ireland, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

Ross achieved significant success at major Canadian competitions, winning the Jumper Championship at Edmonton Northlands six times between 1963 and 1978. She also captured five Jumper Championship titles at the prestigious Calgary Spring Meet.

Her international breakthrough came in 1963 when she won the New York Grand Prix and was named the leading rider at the event. That same year, she was crowned North American Champion and earned recognition as Alberta’s Senior Women’s Athlete of the Year as well as Alberta Horsewoman of the Year.

Ross continued her international success by finishing as Reserve North American Champion in 1966, further establishing herself among North America’s elite show jumpers.

After Induction

Gail Ross made history as the first equestrian athlete from Western Canada selected to compete internationally with the Canadian Equestrian Team.

She was also named to Canada’s Olympic equestrian team for the Tokyo Olympic Games, becoming the first woman selected for that team. Unfortunately, she was forced to withdraw prior to competition.

Her achievements helped open doors for future generations of Canadian female equestrian athletes competing at the international level.
