Russ Peake

Bell Memorial — Inducted 1984

Russ Peake built a distinguished broadcasting career through his commitment to promoting both amateur and professional sport across Alberta. Over more than four decades in radio and television, he became widely respected for ensuring grassroots athletes and community sport organizations received meaningful media recognition.

During twenty-eight years in broadcasting, including fifteen years with CFCN Television in Calgary, Peake covered an extensive range of sporting events. His reporting earned recognition for excellence in curling, rodeo, and chuckwagon racing coverage.

A strong supporter of amateur athletics, Peake followed the example of fellow broadcaster Henry Viney by emphasizing that grassroots competition was an essential part of the overall sport landscape. Through programs such as Junior Sports Scoreboard and Face-Off Circle, he provided regular coverage of minor sport activities and young athletes throughout southern Alberta.

Known for his approachable style and dedication to community sport, Peake helped strengthen connections between local athletes and the broader sporting public.

After Induction

Following his Alberta Sports Hall of Fame induction, Peake continued contributing to sport broadcasting and event presentation for many years.

He served as the in-house public address announcer for the Calgary Flames until retiring from that role in 1996, while also working as a sports anchor with CFCN-TV/CTV. Throughout his career, he remained closely connected to curling and rodeo reporting, earning multiple awards recognizing his coverage.

In 2004, he was inducted into the Southern Alberta Curling Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his long-standing support of the sport.

Later in his career, Peake joined the Chuckwagon Radio Network in 2016 as a co-host, continuing his involvement with western heritage sport traditions.

Russ Peake passed away on April 27, 2020.
