Eldon C. Godfrey

Eldon Godfrey has been a prolific leader in aquatic sports for over 40 years.  He has dedicated himself to the sport of diving as a coach, trainer, manager, official and program developer.

Eldon was instrumental in organizing the University of Calgary Diving Club in 1973, along with his wife Carlie Jean.  He has served as a diving official and referee at the National and International level and has served at 5 Olympic Games (1988, 1992, 1996 & 2000), 12 FINA World Diving Cups, 8 World Aquatic Championships, 6 Pan American Games, 4 Commonwealth Games and countless other international events.

Eldon Godfrey helped to develop a judges training manual and create the FINA Diving Judges Education and Certificate Program, which helped to increase the standard of judging throughout the world.  He has served as President of the University of Calgary Diving Club, President of the Canadian Amateur Diving Association, President of the Aquatic Federation of Canada, Vice-President, Secretary and Chairman of the VANA Bureau, member of the International Technical Diving Committee (FINA TDC- the governing body for diving throughout the world), Vice-President and Director of the International Swimming Hall of Fame and the only Canadian Diving Representative on the FINA Bureau.

Eldon Godfrey has received numerous awards and honours including the: FINA Gold Pin in 1996 (the highest award given to those who serve aquatic sports), Calgary Booster Club – Athletic Leader Award in 1997 and Sportsman of the year in 2000, Canada’s Olympic Hall of Fame Inductee in 2003, and Aquatic Federation of Canada Volunteer of the Year in 2005.

After Induction
  • In 2011, he was named Honorary Life President and presented with the R. Max Ritter Award for contributing to the advancement, understanding and good will among nations.
