Arnold Henderson
Basketball Builder - Inducted 1988
Arnold Henderson began playing basketball in the 1920s while attending the University of British Columbia. He began his coaching career there, where he introduced the zone defense style of play. Arnold Henderson was the assistant coach of the famous Edmonton Commercial Grads whom he trained in zone defense, pivot zone, post play, and screen-play to blend with their fast passing and fast-breaking techniques. He went on to coach the Gradettes Girl's Team, the McDougall Boy's Team, and the Senior Men's Auroras' Team which won the provincial crown. Arnold Henderson organized and conducted many basketball officials' clinics throughout Alberta and served as chairman of the Alberta Basketball Referees' Association for two years.
