Tom Inkster

Wrestling Builder - Inducted 2000

Tom Inkster has been involved in amateur wrestling as an athlete, coach, official, and administrator for more than 37 years. Some of his many accomplishments include winning 13 Provincial Championships as an athlete, training 105 Provincial and 7 National Champions as a coach, officiating - provincially for 27 years - 22 years nationally and 14 years internationally. He served on the Executive Boards of the Calgary Amateur Wrestling Association (29 years) and the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association (6 years). His many awards include the FILA Gold Star, three-time recipient of the Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association Outstanding Contributor Award, an honorary lifetime member of the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Officials Association, and induction into the Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association Hall of Fame, and induction into the Calgary Hall of Fame. He has been a guiding force for wrestling at all levels, providing a model that all - athletes, coaches, officials, and administrators - can follow.

After Induction

Tom has had several trophies named in his honour:

2003 – “Tom Inkster Trophy” for most outstanding wrestler in Calgary High Schools, Annual Award

2007 – “Tom Inkster Trophy” for 3A Provincial High School Team Champion, Annual Award

2009 – Lifetime Contributor Award, Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association

2010 – Long term service award, Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association

  •  Won 13 Provincial Championships as an athlete

  • Teacher with Calgary Board of Education for 30 years, most recently at Ernest Manning High School (18 years)

  • Tournament Director/Host Alberta High School Provincial Championships – 5 times

  • Coached High School athletics in Alberta for 34 years

    • Produced 105 provincial and 7 national champions

    • Won Alberta team championship 3 times

  • “Chair” of Calgary High School Wrestling for 16 years

  • Founding member of the Calgary Amateur Wrestling Association

  • “Executive member” of Alberta Amateur Wrestling Association for 22 years  ( President – 8 years )

  • Member of Canada’s Wrestling Board of Directors for 6 years; chaired the “Women’s Development Committee” which introduced female wrestling in Canada and to the world in1993

  • Canada’s Senior Official/Pairing Master and International Clinician for 16 years

  • Head Official /Pairing Master at 13 World Championships

  • Head Official /Pairing Master at the 1994 Commonwealth Games

Tom passed away December 20, 2010
