Gwen Smith

Gwen Smith was named the University of Toronto's Most Outstanding Athlete in 1945. After her graduation from the University, she accepted the position as the first Women's Physical Education Director at McMaster University. Following her marriage to Don Smith, she moved to Edmonton where she became Director of Physical and Health Education at the YWCA. Gwen Smith has coached, officiated, and supported swimming at all levels ever since, including officiating at Pan American and Commonwealth Games. She has served in nearly every position of the Canadian Amateur Swimming Association - Alberta Section. In 1984, she was appointed as a director of the Alberta Sport Council and served as a member of the Technical Committee. Nationally, Gwen Smith has served as a Director of the Sports Federation of Canada and also as a member of the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sport.
