Doug McKenzie
Hockey Pioneer - Inducted 2009
Doug McKenzie has been involved with amateur hockey for seventy years. As a young boy, he played hockey for the Canadian Athletic Club with the 119th Street Midgets then played minor hockey until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. In 1945, Doug was sent to Mirror, Alberta to work where he was instrumental in organizing the Mirror Nationals Hockey Team.
Doug was instrumental in building hockey relations with Japan and the Hokkaido Ice Hockey Federation. His first trip to Japan was with the U of A Golden Bears to play in the Pacific Rim Tournament. This led to many exchanges with Japan and Hockey Alberta over the years. During his last trip to Japan, Doug presented the “McKenzie Friendship Cup” to the Hokkaido National Team.
Doug has held a number of positions with hockey. He has been involved as the Director of Hockey Canada for six years, Hockey Canada Intermediate Counsel, Chairman, and President for Senior Hockey served on the Board of Directors of Hockey Alberta, President of Hockey Alberta for five years, and Past President for six years. Doug continues to be a strong asset to the Hockey Alberta organization, continuing to be involved with Men’s Senior “AAA” Hockey in Alberta.
In 1993, the “McKenzie Cup” was created and named after Doug. It is awarded to the winner of the Alberta/BC Men’s Senior “AAA” hockey finals. The winner goes on to play for the Allan Cup. Doug has been inducted into the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame and was awarded Hockey Alberta’s highest recognition in 1992, a Life Membership.
