Jack Neumann
Multisport Achievement - Inducted 2006
Jack Neumann has been a fixture on the Alberta sports scene for the last three decades. He volunteered as a statistician for the Calgary Canucks in the Alberta Junior Hockey League and as an accountant in the Western Hockey League in the 1970s to his 27 years of service as the University of Calgary Dinos Sports Information Director (1978- present). His dedication to amateur athletics has made a positive and valuable impact on thousands of Albertans, as has his passion, caring, knowledge, and sensibility toward the student-athletes.
In June 2004, at the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Workshop in Calgary, Jack Neumann was inducted into the CoSIDA Hall of Fame for his long record of excellence as a Sports Information Director in the province of Alberta. Not only did Jack receive the highest honour bestowed on those in his profession, but he was also and remains the first and only Canadian to ever be honoured in such a way.
A member of CoSIDA’s Board of Directors from 1990 through 1992, Jack Neumann remains the only Canadian SID ever to serve as a member of the organization’s board. He has received six CoSIDA publications awards and has been a member of a wide spectrum of the organization’s committees for numerous years. Jack was also a founding member of the Association of Canadian University Sports Information Directors and served as the group’s president from 1982 to 83.
Because of his unwavering dedication to his craft and his unforgettable personality, Jack Neumann remains well known and well-received throughout North America and his drive and professionalism place him head and shoulders above his peers.
After Induction
2007 – Became the U of C Alumni development coordinator after 29 years as the sports information director. From 2007 to June 2012, he helped raise more than $1 million in scholarships for Dinos student-athletes.
2008 – Dinos Football Distinguished Alumni Award (the only/first time the award has been presented to a non-player).
2011 – U of C Dinos Football - Connellan Family Award.
2012 – Retired from U of C career after 34 years of service. The Jack Neumann Sports Information Endowment fund was created in his honour.
2012 – U of C Athletics Hall of Fame inductee – builder category.
2012 – CoSIDA's Warren Berg Award - for his longtime contributions to the profession - given at the annual convention - this year in St. Louis.
2015 – Canadian Interuniversity Sport Austin-Matthews Award for his long-term commitment and leadership to interuniversity sport.
