John Helton

Football Athlete — Inducted 1993

John Helton was one of the most dominant defensive linemen in Canadian Football League history and a cornerstone of the Calgary Stampeders’ defence for more than a decade. Born October 16, 1945, in Karnes City, Texas, Helton developed his football career in the United States before beginning a distinguished professional career in Canada.

Helton joined the Canadian Football League in 1969 and played 14 seasons, including ten seasons with the Calgary Stampeders. He began his career as a defensive end before transitioning to defensive tackle, where he became one of the league’s most feared interior defenders. Known for his strength, durability, and relentless pressure on opposing quarterbacks, Helton quickly established himself as a leader on Calgary’s defensive unit.

He played a major role in helping the Stampeders capture the 1971 Grey Cup Championship, ending a 23-year championship drought for the organization. Throughout the 1970s, Helton consistently ranked among the CFL’s top defensive players.

His outstanding performances earned him the prestigious Schenley Award as the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player in 1972 and again in 1974. He was also runner-up for the award in 1979. During his career with Calgary, Helton received honours as both the Most Valuable Stampeder and the Most Popular Stampeder, reflecting both his on-field excellence and strong connection with fans and teammates.

Over his career, Helton became recognized for his durability and consistency, rarely missing games while anchoring the defensive line during one of the most competitive eras in CFL history.
