George Hopkins

George Hopkins began his remarkable career with the Calgary Stampeders in 1972 as an equipment assistant at just 13 years old. By 1977, at the age of 18, he was promoted to Head Equipment Manager, a position he holds to this day. As of 2022, Hopkins has worked over 1,000 games, including preseason, regular season, playoffs, and 12 Grey Cup appearances, contributing to six Grey Cup championships with the Stampeders.
Known affectionately as "Geo," Hopkins is celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication. His tenure of over 52 seasons makes him one of the longest-serving staff members in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Beyond his duties with the Stampeders, Hopkins has significantly contributed to amateur football. In 1985, alongside Dwayne Mandrusiak, he initiated the Amateur Football Equipment Inspection Program in Alberta. Through this program, Hopkins has conducted over 400 equipment inspections, advising youth football programs on equipment safety, maintenance, and proper fitting, thereby enhancing player safety across the province.
Hopkins has also served on the board of the Calgary Spring Football Association since 2009, contributing to the growth and development of youth football. His community involvement includes supporting teams affected by disasters, such as providing equipment to the Fort McMurray Monarchs after the 2016 wildfires.
His contributions have been recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the Calgary Stampeders Wall of Fame in 2014, being honored as an Athletic Leader by the Calgary Booster Club in 2019, and was the recipient of the Hugh Campbell Distinguished Leadership Award in 2023.
