Mel Kowalchuk
Baseball Builder - Special Legends Class of 2025
From his early days playing baseball as a child through to adulthood, Mel Kowalchuk’s passion for the game never wavered. That love of sport carried him beyond the field and into leadership in the late 1970s, when he served as president of the Edmonton Tigers of the Alberta Major Baseball League.
Mel always dreamed of bringing professional baseball to Edmonton. Inspired by the simple joy of a sunny afternoon at the ballpark with family, a hot dog, and a cold drink, he first tried to bring a rookie-league franchise to the city. When that plan fell through, something even bigger came along. He discovered the Ogden A’s of the Pacific Coast League were for sale and persuaded Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington to purchase the team and relocate it to Edmonton.
When the new Triple-A franchise was established, Pocklington encouraged Mel to become general manager. After four requests, Mel finally accepted, becoming the first GM of the newly named Edmonton Trappers.
From 1981 to 2001, under his leadership, the Trappers became one of the Pacific Coast League’s most respected franchises, winning three league championships. In 1995, Mel was honoured as Pacific Coast League Executive of the Year. He also served as Assistant President of the league during the 1990s.
Mel’s determination proved vital in building a new Edmonton baseball stadium in the late 1980s and early 1990s. When others said it couldn’t be done on the chosen site, he spent countless nights working through challenges until a solution was found. The ballpark that stands today exists largely because of his persistence.
Alongside Pocklington, Mel also co-owned the Salt Lake City Trappers for a short period before selling the club, shortly before its legendary 29-game winning streak.
After his time in Edmonton, Mel continued his baseball career as general manager of the Albuquerque Isotopes from 2002 to 2004, and later as GM of the Edmonton Cracker-Cats in 2005.
His leadership extended beyond baseball. In the 1980s, he served as president of the Edmonton Brickmen and the Canadian Soccer League. In the 1990s, he became GM of the Edmonton Drillers indoor soccer team, and in the 2000s, he returned to the sport as GM of FC Edmonton. From 2007 to 2014, he also presided over the Canadian Major Indoor Soccer League.
Through his vision, dedication, and lifelong passion for sport, Mel Kowalchuk helped shape Edmonton’s sporting landscape — leaving a legacy that will be celebrated for generations.
