John McKenzie
Hockey Athlete- Special Legends Class of 2025
Born in High River, Alberta, John McKenzie began his hockey journey with the Calgary Buffalos and Medicine Hat Tigers before moving into the senior ranks with the Calgary Stampeders. He broke into the NHL in 1959 with the Chicago Black Hawks and went on to play for the Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, and Boston Bruins.
It was in Boston where McKenzie truly made his mark. The hard-working right winger was named a Second Team All-Star in the 1969–70 season and played a key role on the Bruins’ Stanley Cup–winning teams in 1970 and 1972. Known for his accuracy, he once led the NHL in shooting percentage. Over 12 NHL seasons, McKenzie appeared in 693 regular season games, tallying 206 goals and 268 assists for 474 points.
McKenzie was also a standout in the World Hockey Association. After capturing a Calder Cup with the Hershey Bears in 1963, he went on to play seven WHA seasons, leading all Alberta-born players with 163 goals, 250 assists and 413 points in 477 games. He skated with the Philadelphia Blazers, Vancouver Blazers, Cincinnati Stingers, Minnesota Fighting Saints, and New England Whalers. His skill and leadership earned him a spot in the 1974 Summit Series, where he represented Canada against the Soviet Union.
In recognition of his impact, the Hartford Whalers retired his number 19 jersey—a lasting tribute to a player whose grit, scoring touch, and leadership made him a fan favourite on both sides of the border.
