The Calgary Canucks Junior A Hockey Club is one of Alberta’s most historic and successful hockey franchises. Founded in 1971, the Canucks are the oldest team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and have built a tradition of excellence both on and off the ice. Over their history, the organization has won 11 regular season titles, 10 Doyle Cups, multiple AJHL championships, and in 1995 captured the ultimate prize — the National Championship Centennial Cup.
The 1994–95 Calgary Canucks entered the season determined to bring a national title to Alberta. After finishing second overall in the regular season, the team won its 8th AJHL Championship and defeated the Chilliwack Chiefs to earn the Doyle Cup and advance to the Centennial Cup in Ottawa. There, the Canucks topped the round-robin standings and advanced to the championship game against the Gloucester Rangers.
In a dramatic final, Calgary rallied late to tie the game with just 59 seconds remaining in the third period. In overtime, Jason Abramoff scored the winner only 47 seconds in, securing the Centennial Cup and the first National Championship in franchise history. The victory remains one of the most memorable moments in Alberta junior hockey.
Remarkably, every player on the 1995 championship roster was a product of Hockey Calgary, reflecting the strength of the city’s grassroots development system. The team’s success helped solidify Calgary’s reputation as a premier junior hockey city and inspired generations of young athletes.
Beyond 1995, the Canucks have continued to shape Alberta hockey. The organization has sent more than 44 players to the NHL and helped hundreds earn scholarships to Canadian and American universities. The 1995 Centennial Cup title stands as a defining achievement — a symbol of dedication, community support, and junior hockey excellence.
As the 30th anniversary of their national championship approached and with Calgary hosting the Centennial Cup in 2025, the legacy of the 1995 Calgary Canucks continued to resonate. Members of the 1995 team supported the 2025 team and with excitement, witnessed the organization’s second National Championship Centennial Cup. Their induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame celebrates not only a championship season, but a lasting contribution to the growth and tradition of hockey in Alberta.
