Henwood, Dale - 2012

Dale Henwood

Multisport Builder, Calgary

Inducted in 2012

Dale Henwood devoted his life to sport development, the pursuit of excellence in Alberta, and to making sport in Canada better.  In 1994, Dale became the first President and CEO of the Canadian Sport Centre Calgary.  Through his leadership, the CSCC created a world class team of experts (coaches, sport scientists, medical personnel and administrative support), ensuring that Canada’s top athletes training in Alberta have what they need to reach the international podium on a repeated basis.

A former university and Olympic hockey coach, Dale’s career switched to a sport administrative role in 1980 with Hockey Alberta and then the Alberta Sport Council.  Dale has committed himself to athlete and coach development and welfare, and local, provincial and national infrastructure for the long term benefit of Albertan and Canadian sport.

Dale also promotes and advocates the benefits of physical activity and sport, writing and speaking to our politicians for the need for greater government commitment and involvement.  He works tirelessly to speak up and advocate for the value that sport and healthy lifestyle brings to our youth.

Most of all, Dale has transformed the way Albertans and Canadians think about developing high performance sport.  He argued “that we should fund excellence not equity”. This spawned the growth of the Podium Canada, Own the Podium and Road to Excellence Programs administered jointly by Sport Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC).
