Elsie MacFarlane Farano

Basketball Athlete — Inducted 1983

Elsie MacFarlane Farano, widely known as “Toots” Farano, was one of Canada’s outstanding female basketball players during the 1930s. Known for her consistency and scoring ability, she built an exceptional competitive career over nine years of senior basketball competition.

Farano played a key role with the Calgary Buffalos, one of Canada’s leading women’s basketball teams of the era. Her most remarkable achievement came in 1939 when she set a world record by scoring in her 166th consecutive game. On the night the record was established, she scored ten points to help lead the Buffalos to the Canadian Championship title.

Her performance and dedication helped strengthen the profile of women’s basketball in Canada during a period when opportunities for female athletes were still developing.
