Fred Storey
Curling Athlete — Inducted 1984
Fred Storey was one of Alberta’s most accomplished curlers and a key contributor to one of the most dominant teams in Canadian curling history during the 1960s.
His competitive curling career began in 1948 with a high school district championship, marking the start of more than three decades of success in provincial, national, and international competition. Over the years, Storey won numerous bonspiel championships across Western Canada and achieved strong results in Dominion-level competition.
Storey competed on seven Alberta Championship rinks, consistently representing the province at the highest level of Canadian curling. His greatest achievements came as lead on Ron Northcott’s Calgary-based rink, widely recognized as one of the strongest teams of its era.
Together, they captured Canadian Men’s Curling Championship (Brier) titles in 1966, 1968, and 1969. Following each victory, the team represented Canada internationally and won the World Curling Championships in those same years, helping establish Canada as the dominant force in world curling.
Known for his accuracy and consistency, Storey earned All-Star Lead honours at the Brier on multiple occasions and was respected as one of the premier lead players of his generation.
After Induction
Fred Storey remained respected within Alberta’s curling community following his competitive career and continued to be recognized for his contributions to the sport through multiple honours celebrating the success of the Northcott championship rink.
Fred Storey passed away on December 2, 2019, in Calgary, Alberta.
