Phil Tollestrup

Basketball Athlete — Inducted 1984

Born on born October 12, 1949, Phil Tollestrup was one of Alberta’s leading basketball players during the 1970s, achieving success at the high school, university, national, and international levels.

Tollestrup first gained recognition while attending Raymond High School, where he led the team to a Provincial Basketball Championship. He continued his success at the University of Lethbridge, establishing intercollegiate scoring records and becoming one of the program’s standout athletes.

He later attended Brigham Young University, where he competed as a member of a conference championship team, further strengthening his reputation as a highly skilled scorer and competitor.

Internationally, Tollestrup represented Canada as a member of the Canadian National Basketball Team. He competed at the 1971 Pan American Games, the 1974 FIBA World Championships, and the 1975 Pan American Games. In recognition of his performance, he was selected in 1974 as a North and South American All-Star.

One of the highlights of his career came at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montréal, where he ranked as the tournament’s third-leading scorer, demonstrating his offensive ability against the world’s top competition.
