Helen Vanderburg

Synchronized Swimming Athlete — Inducted 1980

Born May 12, 1959, in Calgary, Alberta, Helen Vanderburg was one of Canada’s most accomplished synchronized swimmers of the 1970s and a leading figure in the country’s rise to international prominence in the sport.

Training with the Calgary Aquabelles, Vanderburg first gained national recognition by winning Junior Canadian Championship gold medals from 1971 through 1973. In 1973, she captured the National Junior Aggregate title along with gold medals in solo and figures competition, establishing herself as one of Canada’s top developing athletes.

Advancing to senior competition, Vanderburg won Canadian national titles in figures and duet from 1977 to 1979, as well as the senior solo championship in 1979. Her international success included gold medals in duet at the 1977 Pan Pacific Games and gold in solo at the 1979 Pan Pacific Games.

At the 1979 Pan American Games, she earned gold medals in both solo and duet events, further strengthening Canada’s international reputation in synchronized swimming.

Her greatest achievements came at the world championship level, where she captured multiple world titles in solo and duet competition at the 1978 World Aquatics Championships and the 1979 Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) Cup. Across major international competitions, Vanderburg won eight world championship gold medals, becoming one of the most decorated synchronized swimmers of her era.
