Fran Heath

Synchronized Swimming Builder — Inducted 1995

Fran Heath played a significant role in the development and growth of synchronized swimming in Edmonton and across Alberta through her leadership as a coach, mentor, and program organizer.

She joined the Edmonton Aquadettes in 1959 as a recreational swimmer and began her coaching career in 1963. In 1968, Heath became head coach of the Aquadettes, guiding athletes to success at the provincial, regional, national, and international levels. Under her leadership, Aquadette swimmers competed at the 1975 Canada Winter Games, winning gold medals in both duet and team competition.

Committed to expanding opportunities within the sport, Heath helped establish the Alberta Master’s Program for adult women in 1982. The program provided competitive opportunities for retired athletes while welcoming newcomers to synchronized swimming. Known as the Edmonton YWCA Aquadettes Masters, the team achieved considerable success, including multiple gold medals at the 1985 World Masters Games in figures, solo, duet, trio, and team events.

Her dedication to athlete development and volunteer leadership earned widespread recognition within the sport community. Heath received a Coach Recognition Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Sport Community in 1989 and a Sport Volunteer Recognition Award from Alberta Sport in 1992.

After Induction

Following her coaching career, Heath continued contributing to synchronized swimming through writing and mentorship. She authored two instructional books, Synchronized Swim Routine Choreography and 150 Plus Floating Patterns, sharing her knowledge and experience with athletes and coaches.

Remaining active in the sport, she returned to competition as a swimmer with the Edmonton Aquadettes Masters 50-and-Over Team and competed at the Provincial Masters Championships in April 2000.

Beyond sport, Heath pursued watercolor painting and continued writing for various publications and newspapers.

Fran Heath passed away on November 14, 2025.
