Jack Kenyon
Basketball Builder — Inducted 1990
Jack Kenyon devoted more than three decades to basketball as a player, coach, educator, and sport builder, helping develop athletes and strengthen collegiate basketball programs in Alberta.
He began his coaching career in 1963 at Mount Royal College, where he built one of the most successful programs in Alberta Colleges’ Athletic Conference history. Over twenty-seven seasons of conference competition, Kenyon’s teams captured seven championships and compiled an outstanding record of 198 wins and 26 losses.
Known for his ability to develop athletes both on and off the court, Kenyon coached numerous players who advanced to higher levels of competition. Twenty-two of his athletes went on to represent Canada on the national team, ten competed professionally in Europe, and one advanced to play in the National Basketball Association.
Kenyon also contributed to basketball at the national level, serving as a coach with Canada’s Junior National Basketball Team from 1975 to 1979. In 1988, he served as assistant coach of the Calgary 88s in the World Basketball League.
A dedicated educator as well as a coach, Kenyon combined his passion for mathematics and basketball in both classroom teaching and on-court strategy. Throughout a 33-year teaching career at Mount Royal College, he encouraged academic achievement alongside athletic development and published several papers focused on improving accessibility in mathematics education.
After Induction
Following his induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1990, Kenyon continued teaching and mentoring students and athletes until retiring in the spring of 1994 after a distinguished career in education.
Later that year, he passed away tragically in 19th September 1994.
In recognition of his lasting impact on student-athletes and education, Mount Royal established the Jack Kenyon Memorial Scholarship in his honour.
