Donald M. Lovo
Archery Builder — Inducted 1985
Donald M. Lovo was a pioneering leader in the development of archery in Canada and an internationally respected official whose contributions helped shape the sport at every level. He played a significant role in advancing archery nationally and internationally for more than four decades.
Lovo achieved success as an elite competitor, winning several provincial and national archery championships. From 1962 to 1965, he represented Canada as a member of the national team competing at the international level. He later served as Vice President and President of the Federation of Canadian Archers, contributing to the growth and organization of the sport across the country.
In 1968, Lovo became the first Canadian recognized as an International Archery Judge, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in officiating and sport governance. His leadership earned him international recognition, including the Fédération Internationale de Tir à l’Arc (FITA) Gold and Silver Plaquettes. In 1984, he was honoured as Air Canada’s Official of the Year.
After Induction
Following his induction, Lovo continued to expand his influence within international archery and sport development. Widely regarded as the “father of international judging” within FITA, he served the sport as an athlete, coach, instructor, official, and executive leader.
He held numerous senior leadership roles within FITA, including First Vice President and long-time Chair of the FITA Judges’ Committee, a position he held for approximately twenty years. He also served on several technical and development committees and contributed to rule development and officiating standards worldwide.
Beginning in the 1990s, Lovo travelled extensively conducting sport development missions and coaching seminars in more than fifty countries throughout Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, and the Americas. His work included coaching education programs, international judging seminars, and technical advisory roles for organizing committees hosting major international competitions.
Throughout his career, he served as judge, technical delegate, chairman of juries, and senior technical official at numerous international events, including Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, World Championships, Pan-American Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and Canada Summer Games. He also contributed to Canadian sport governance as a member of the Canadian Olympic Association Board of Directors and served as a world team coach, manager, and national team representative.
Lovo remained actively involved in archery development and education for more than thirty years following his competitive career, helping to strengthen officiating standards and athlete development programs around the world.
Donald M. Lovo passed away on May 30, 2006.
