Margaret Scott

Synchronized Swimming Builder — Inducted 1976

Margaret Scott was a pioneering leader in the development and promotion of synchronized swimming in Alberta and across Canada. Born on June 16, 1921, in Vancouver, British Columbia, she devoted much of her life to aquatic sport as an athlete, coach, judge, and administrator.

Scott became actively involved in synchronized swimming in 1960 and had previously competed with the Royal Life Saving Society synchronized swimming team. She later became a key figure in athlete development through her work at the Calgary Winter Club, where she organized and coached the synchronized swimming program for ten years, helping to build strong competitive opportunities for young athletes.

Her contributions extended beyond synchronized swimming. Scott coached the Canadian diving team during an international tour of South America and served as assistant manager for Canada’s speed swimming team at the Pan American Games in Colombia. As a nationally rated judge, she played an important role in training coaches and judges while helping maintain competitive standards within aquatic sport.

Throughout her career, Scott served on numerous executive boards and committees within the aquatic’s community, contributing to program development and sport governance at multiple levels. Her leadership helped strengthen synchronized swimming programs and volunteer sport administration throughout Alberta.

After Induction

Following her induction into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1976, Scott continued her lifelong involvement in aquatic sport and community service. A member of Vancouver’s first synchronized swimming team, she remained active as an athlete, coach, and judge for much of her life.

Her dedication to sport and volunteerism earned widespread recognition. She received numerous honours, including the Rose Kohn Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to Sport, the Henry Viney Award as Calgary Sportswoman of the Year for Outstanding Dedication, the Queen’s 25th Anniversary Medal, the Government of Alberta Achievement Award for Service, and multiple Synchro Canada awards. She was also honoured by the Calgary Booster Club with both the Athletic Leadership Award and later Sportsman of the Year recognition.

Margaret Scott passed away on December 10, 2018, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 97.
