Michelle Cameron

Synchronized Swimming Athlete — Inducted 1991

Michelle Cameron was one of Canada’s most successful synchronized swimmers of the 1980s and a central figure in the country’s rise to international dominance in the sport. She began synchronized swimming in 1975 as a junior athlete and went on to win eight Canadian National Championship titles during her 13-year career with the Calgary Aquabelles.

Following the 1984 Olympic Games, Cameron partnered with Carolyn Waldo to form one of the most successful duet teams in international synchronized swimming. Within their first year competing together, the pair captured gold at the 1985 Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA) World Cup.

Their partnership continued to achieve exceptional success, winning gold medals at the 1986 World Aquatics Championships, the 1986 Commonwealth Games, the 1987 Pan Pacific Championships, and the 1987 FINA World Cup. Cameron reached the pinnacle of her competitive career at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games in Seoul, where she and Waldo won the gold medal in duet competition.

In addition to her duet success, Cameron was a member of Canada’s gold medal–winning synchronized swimming team at the 1986 World Aquatics Championships.

After Induction

Following her competitive career, Cameron continued to contribute to Canadian sport through leadership and athlete support roles. In 1996, she served as Canada’s Athlete Services Officer at the Atlanta Olympic Games, assisting athletes competing at the international level.

She has remained involved in sport governance and leadership, including appointment to the Board of Governors of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
